All About Romance polls its readers to determine the Top 100 Romances. 2010 poll just closed; in my typical disorganized fashion, I forgot to submit a list, but I can’t wait to see the results. Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2010 – Customer Favorites

Published by under Books,NaBloPoMo

[this post has been back-dated]

In other words, books people bought in large quantities :-) And, surprisingly, I read some of them (though, in my case, it was the local libraries doing the ordering):

  • #3Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins. Great dystopia.
  • #5The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis. We meet again!
  • #8Freedom: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen. Waiting list, sweet waiting list.
  • #9Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern. More waiting list goodness.
  • #19Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum) by Janet Evanovich. Ugh. I gave it 2 stars.
  • #38Changes (Dresden Files, Book 12) by Jim Butcher. List, waiting.

Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2010 – Editor’s Picks

Published by under Books,NaBloPoMo

[this post has been back-dated]

It’s that time of the year again.

Last time I looked at the list, it was 2007. Eeeep. Back then, I only read one book from the list. Three years later, and I am doing a bit better: (depressed woman reads too many books. news at 11.)

  • #6Freedom: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen. On the waiting list at my local library
  • #10The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis. Very enlightening.
  • #38Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie. I actually prefer her other books.
  • #84The Poisoner’s Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York by Deborah Blum. The Jazz Age will never be the same.

Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2009

Published by under Books,NaBloPoMo

[this post has been back-dated]

Hey, 2010 is in sight!

  • #42 (EP) & #30 (CF) – Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins. Lightning strikes twice.
  • #41 (CF) – The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time, Book 12) by Robert Jordan. Book 1 of Brandon Sanderson’s attempt to finish the series.
  • #75 (CF) – Turn Coat (The Dresden Files, Book 11) by Jim Butcher. Some mysteries are solved.

(In my defense, it seems like half of the top picks were Republicans criticizing Democrats, which is not my cup of tea).

Amazon’s Top 100 Books of 2008

Published by under Books,NaBloPoMo

[this post has been back-dated]

I am trying to catch up on my posts while sleep deprived, so all deep thought has been abandoned in favor of lists. I realized I haven’t looked at Amazon’s Top 100 Books in forever, so, let’s see what I missed in 2008. To spare the innocent, I will combine Editors’ Picks (EP) and Customer Favorites (CF) into one list. Don’t say I never do anything for you :P

  • #12 (EP) – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I picked it up at a bad time; will try re-reading again one of these days.
  • #17 (EP) & #27 (CP) – Duma Key: A Novel by Stephen King. The King is back.
  • #28 (EP) – The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Not only for young adults.
  • #31 (EP) – Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. I got it for a friend. Wonder if he ever bothered to read it.
  • #61 (EP) – The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Listen to Gaiman reading it.
  • #98 (EP) – Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. Fight against the Big Brother.
  • # 87 (CF) – Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10) by Jim Butcher. Hello again, Harry Dresden, wizard!

And hey, who knew that the paperback 4th edition of What To Expect When You Are Expecting hit the shelves? Finally, the girl on the cover looks like she is in the correct decade ;-)

Thump

Published by under Books,NaBloPoMo

[this post has been back-dated]

That’s the noise I made when I fell off the NaBloPoMo wagon on Friday night. Took me all weekend to recover, but here I am, back in the saddle (or in the hay, as the case may be) again. And since WordPress has the lovely ability to backdate posts, I hereby declare 3:40 pm on Monday, November 15th to be 10 pm Friday, November 12th.

Did you know that Publishers Weekly does a “Best Books” list? Neither did I. Here’s their Best Books of 2010 and PW’s Best Children’s Books 2010

I have actually managed to read some of the books on these lists :-)

  • Freedom by Jonathan Franzen – on the waiting list at the library
  • The Big Short by Michael Lewis – about the financial crash of 2008; highly recommend
  • The Forbidden Rose by Joanna Bourne – love and spies during the Revolution in France, what’s not to like?
  • Feed by Mira Grant – on the waiting list
  • The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin – gods, mortals, love… Our library has not acquired The Broken Kingdoms yet, so I’ll have to wait and see if it’s as good as the first book
  • The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires by Tim Wu – on the waiting list
  • Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins – conclusion to a great dystopia trilogy; for older teenagers and up

And this lets me segue (gracelessly) into my attempt at a book review blog – “So Many Books So Little Time”. If anybody wants to join me in this hopeless endeavor, let me know!

Book Fairy and Page 99 Test

Published by under Books

Great article by Joe Walton on tor.com – The Suck Fairy, who “comes in when you come back to a book that you liked when you read it before, and on re-reading—well, it sucks.” The Suck Fairy has visited some movies I used to love, too (Navy SEALs, anyone?)

And the page99test (from Guardian.co.uk via Robin McKinley’s blog post) – reading page 99 to see if you’ll like the book. Must remember to apply it to my TBR pile and to the books I have read already, should be interesting to see if it works for me.

Rating Books (OR hey, look, a non-grace in small things post!)

Published by under Books

I have a question for you, my book-reading friends ;)

I use LibraryThing to keep track of my books, and among other things it allows me to rate books on a 5-star scale (half-stars allowed). I am trying to come up with method to my madness as far as assigning stars goes. This is what I have so far:

No stars – Did not finish the book. Because maybe it’s wonderful and all, but I just couldn’t get into it. Or it could be horrible, but once again, I did not bother to finish. Who knows. For example, I could not finish Justine Larbalestier’s “How to Ditch Your Fairy.” The book got good reviews from others, it just wasn’t what I like.

1/2 star – Awful. Finished, but no idea why. Perhaps it was a willpower-building exercise, or I am a glutton for punishment.

One star – Very bad (F). Writing is horrible, plot non-existent, protagonists inspire hatred. Somewhere, trees weep at the horrible use their brethren and sistren were put to.

Two stars – Bad (D). Writing is clunky, plot holes abound, protagonists are not likable. Won’t seek anything by this author out unless I am desperate, and books recommended by this author are automatically suspect. Case in point: “Undead and Unwelcome” by MaryJanice Davidson. The first book in the series (“Undead and Unwed”) was a 4-star for me, the second (“Undead and Unemployed”) a 3-star, and the rest are in the 2-star category.

Three stars – Average (C). Serviceable. Decent writing. Was enjoyable, time went by quickly, but I am not seized with desire to run out and buy the author’s back list. Will check out other books by the author from the library, or pick them up at Half-Price books. A lot of the romance books I read fall into this category.

Four stars – Good (B). Would recommend to others. Want them on my bookshelf at home, and might buy some of these books at Amazon.com in paperback if I can’t find them at Half-Price books (in particular those that verge into 4.5 star category). Most of J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series books would go there. Also most of Terry Pratchett books. Ditto Sharon Shinn, Louis McMaster Bujold, Elizabeth Moon, and Connie Willis.

Five stars – Excellent (A). If I were told to pick books to take with me to a desert island, these are the ones I would take. Often, the authors are the ones whose new hard-cover books I would pre-order at Amazon.com. I am thinking of limiting the number of 5-star books to 100, to promote selectivity. After all, the books that didn’t quite make the cut can have the 4.5 stars rating. Currently, Robin McKinley’s “Sunshine” and “The Blue Sword” are in that category, as well as Guy Gavriel Kay’s “Tigana,” “A Song for Arbonne,” and “The Fionavar Tapestry” trilogy. Also Terry Pratchett’s “Small Gods” and the Pratchett/Gaiman collaboration “Good Omens.” And C.S. Friedman’s “Coldfire” trilogy.

**********

What do you think? Other suggestions on how to approach the ratings? What makes a book Excellent, Good, Average, Bad, or Awful for you? Where’s the line between Good/Excellent, and Bad/Awful? Go forth and comment!

Mmmmm, more books

Published by under Books

As fate would have it, last night I convinced HisMelness that he will survive watching the boys for 20 minutes while I make a quick library run. DemonChild and Squeektar were both in an agreeable mood, so after a gourmet meal of McDonald’s happy meals for them and tea with McDonald’s apple pies for me, I put the pedal to the metal and high-tailed it to the library.

So many books, and only 10 minutes to pick some out. I decided on the path of least resistance and perused the new releases shelves. The result: currently reading “Dust” by Elizabeth Bear, while “The Absolute Sandman, Vols. I & II” by Neil Gaiman are patiently waiting for me in a spot unaccessible to my children. The Sandman books are graphic novels, and lugging them to the car was quite the work out :-)

And today I ordered “Night Life,” “Creation in Death,” and “The Sweet Far Thing” from Amazon.com. Bookseses, sweet bookseses!

She reads!

Published by under Books

After two years of living in the new house, I finally made it to the public library a couple of weeks ago. A shame, really, since the library is only five minutes away from us, so I am not sure why it took me so long.

For my inaugural run, I checked out three books: “The Kept Man” by Jami Attenberg, “The Opposite of Love” by Julie Buxbaum, and “The Heart-Shaped Box” by Joe Hill.

“The Opposite of Love” – very enjoyable tale of young lawyer Emily Huxby figuring out what’s important in life, and what the opposite of love is. I read it in one night.

“The Heart-Shaped Box” – another very good read. Aging rock star Judas Coyne buys a ghost, and bad things start to happen. Another late night spent reading.

“The Kept Man” – for some reason, I just could not get into this tale of Jarvis Miller, whose husband, a famous painter, has been in a coma for six years. Returned it to the library today, with no regrets.

Hopefully I will make another foray into the library soon. I miss reading!

I know you all missed the booklists ;-)

Amazon.com’s Best Books of 2007
I have read exactly ONE book on that list – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Downright depressing.

NY Times 100 Notable Books of 2007
You guessed it. Just one. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, again.

Oooh, and the Times have lists going back to 1981! I suspect I have found the holy grail of “hmmm, what shall I write about tonight” order :-) Without further ado:

Nothing from 2006. Unsurprisingly, only Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from 2005. 2004 – nothing. 2003 – Jennifer Government by Max Barry, Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde, The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century by Paul Krugman. 2002 – The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Q is for Quarry by Sue Grafton. 2001 – Not a damn thing. 2000 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Coming soon – the many ways I can say “never heard of these books” from 1981 to 1999!

There can never be enough posts about books :-)

So, I did pretty well on the “fantasy”-tagged books on Library things. So many books, so little time: the Fantasy edition

Library Thing is cool. One of these decades I am going to have time to join it and catalog my books…

Below, in alphabetical order, are 196 books (used to be 200, but I consciensciously removed the duplicates) most often tagged as “fantasy” on Library Thing. Why? Because I love lists ;-) Also because, disturbingly, I have read many books (66%) on that particular one (they are boldfaced).
